We Have Completed the Most Challenging Part of the Construction

The construction of the new high school in Baie de Henne, Haiti, has reached a significant milestone. Thanks to the support of donors from the Czech Republic and the immense commitment of local residents, the first half of the concrete roof has been successfully completed, representing the technically most challenging part of the entire build.

On Friday, June 5, 2026, the concreting of the first half of the new high school’s roof took place. This is a crucial moment for the entire project. This particular stage was among the most technically complex and demanding parts of the construction.

The completion of the concreting means that the school is gradually taking its final shape and coming closer to the day when it can serve children and young people from Baie de Henne and surrounding communities.

“The completion of the first half of the roof is a crucial moment for the entire project. It shows that construction is moving forward despite all the difficulties currently facing Haiti,” says Roman Musil, the aid coordinator for Caritas Archdiocese Olomouc in Haiti.

A School Built by the Whole Community

Alongside the construction progress itself, the immense involvement of local residents is highly encouraging.

According to information from the Parish of St. Michael the Archangel in Baie de Henne, a large number of people gathered voluntarily on the day of the concreting to help with their labor and dedication. Furthermore, the local community itself covers the cost of refreshments, water, and food for the workers. The school is therefore not just a result of foreign aid, but is becoming a collective work of the local people, who see it as the future of their children.

“On the day of the concreting, a large number of people gathered voluntarily, contributing to the work through their labor and determination,” writes parish administrator Fr. Phechner Julmisse in his letter.

It is precisely moments like these that show aid makes sense. It is not just about a building, but about the joint effort of the entire community to create better conditions for the next generation.

Every Crown Helps

At the same time, local partners strive for the most economical use of the funds raised thanks to Czech donors. Materials were purchased where they were most cost-effective, and they also managed to negotiate significantly cheaper transport for the construction materials.

Thanks to this accountability, it was possible to manage a large portion of the work even at a time when Haiti faces rising prices for fuel, construction materials, and a complex security situation.

Work Will Continue

Following the completion of the first half of the roof, a necessary technological break is now underway. The concrete needs sufficient time to cure and achieve the required strength. Afterwards, it will be possible to move the shuttering and proceed with concreting the remaining part of the roof.

The next goal will be the completion of classrooms and other spaces that the school needs for its operation.

Thank You for Your Support

Without the support of donors from the Czech Republic, this project could not have come to fruition. Thank you to everyone who helps build a place where Haitian children will have the opportunity to receive an education, develop their skills, and prepare for the future.
