Cheers to Haiti: surprise and proceeds over 23 000 crowns
Olomouc – Almost all boys and girls in Haiti like to play football. Yet Haiti is a football outsider worldwide. “We used to play board games at the grammar school, and I always took the side of outsiders. So I wanted to play table football in Haiti. I bought a magazine, cut out Haitian players and put them on football players,” recalls the café and architect Luděk Jasiok in the 1970s, when Haiti played at the World Championship. He was on Haiti’s side this August. Thanks to its Traffic Coffee cafe, 12 other businesses in Olomouc, Dobrodruhá shop, visitors to the pilgrimage of families at Svatý Hostýn and other good people managed to fundraise 23 295 crowns. From this money, the Archdiocesan Caritas Olomouc will make healthcare available to those in need, especially children, in remote areas of Haiti.
A Haiti toast, delicious desserts and a bag endowed with helping families in crisis
The Haiti Campaign For Health Haiti lasted all August. The people from Olomouc could refresh themselves with a glass of water in selected companies and donate any amount of money for it to the box. This year they were also surprised. “In the last week of August, guests enjoyed slices, tiramisu and genuine Haitian cakes in some businesses. But we, the Chariots, were also surprised. For example, when the management of the café In the Woods, together with the box office, gave us a large bag full of towels, toys and food for families in need,” says Klára Lőffelmannová from the Archdiocesan Charity Olomouc.
The health of Haiti this year brought 15 795 crowns. Other people contributed 7 500 CZK to Caritas’s account. The Archdiocesan Caritas Olomouc wants to organize medical examinations in remote areas of Haiti for this money and buy medicines and vitamins. “Last year, thanks to the campaign, we chacked and treated more than 360 needy people, especially children. Many Haitians are dying of trivial illness because they do not have enough food, vitamins or quality drinking water. They are more vulnerable. We also want to support healthcare from this year’s proceeds,” continues humanitarian worker Klára.
Medical examinations will help next year. Because of the riots
The health camp will take place in Haiti next year. Currently, it is dangerous in the Caribbean island state, so the mission of the Archdiocesan Charity Olomouc is postponed by a few months. “Demonstrations against a corrupt government have grown into robberies and violence. Gangs have also begun to rage in areas where we have been helping for years. The people there are scared, even our partners, who did not even leave their town a few weeks ago. Now the situation is calming down, but it is still dangerous in Haiti,” says Klára Lőffelmannová.
The Archdiocesan Caritas Olomouc has been helping in Haiti since 2005. Its main project is Child sponsorship programme, thanks to which the poorest children receive education at school, as well as one hot meal a day. In addition, Caritas is helping the Haitian communities by conducting medical examinations, materially or disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes that are typical of the Caribbean region.
